Write about a year, not about the wedding. Most anniversary messages sent in India are about one day that four hundred people attended and everybody has already described: the date, the mandap, the photographs, seven years ago today. The years since are the part nobody has written down, and one sentence about a specific one of them is worth a paragraph about the wedding.

Pick the year you both remember for a reason. The one with the hospital, the one with the move, the year the money was tight, the year nothing happened at all and that was the point. Below are lines in Hindi and English you can send as they are, the two things worth thanking him for that nobody says out loud, and what to leave out.

What to write, and what to skip

1.Name the year, then name the thing he did in it

This is the whole method and it takes one line. Twenty nineteen, when he took the transfer and never once said it was a sacrifice. The March he drove to your parents at night without asking. The bad eight months when he kept the house ordinary on purpose. A message with a year and a specific act in it could not have been sent to anybody else, which is why it gets kept.

2.Lines that work in English

Short beats poetic, and specific beats both. Each of these names something real instead of praising him in general, which is the difference between a message he screenshots and a message he replies to with a heart.

  • Eleven years, and you still call from the car when you are five minutes away. Happy anniversary.
  • You were a stranger with a folder of photographs. Now you are the person I tell things to first.
  • Thank you for the year you took the transfer and said nothing about it. Happy anniversary.
  • Nobody asked us to like each other this much. Six years, and here we are.
  • Happy anniversary to the person who has never made me feel like a guest in his own house.
  • The wedding was one day. The last nine years are the part I would do again.

3.Lines that work in Hindi

These are written with आप, which is what a lot of Indian wives say at home. If you say तुम to him, change it before sending. A line in the wrong register is the fastest way for a message to read like something forwarded from a group.

4.If it was an arranged marriage, say the true thing

Every quote list hands out soulmate, made for each other, love at first sight. None of that happened, and he knows it did not. The honest version is better and almost nobody writes it: two people who were introduced, decided to try, and built a family out of it. Say that you would choose him now, knowing everything, which is a much larger statement than anything about destiny.

5.Thank him for something unglamorous

The gratitude in most anniversary messages is for love and support, which are words. The things that actually cost him something are usually smaller and never mentioned: the job he stayed in, the arguments with his own family he handled quietly, the years he drove to your parents every Sunday, the hobby he let go when the children came. Name one. It is often the first time anyone has.

6.If this is the first anniversary

The first one arrives while everybody is still talking about the wedding, and the temptation is to make it a smaller version of it. Write instead about the year that just happened, because a first year is mostly logistics, new relatives and learning how somebody sleeps. Anything true about that year is more interesting than the photographs, and it sets the habit for the twenty anniversaries after this one.

7.What to leave out

Anything comparing you both to a couple from a film. My better half, my other half, and the joke about tolerating each other for another year, which reads fine in a group and lands strangely when it is the only thing you sent him. Forwarded shayari is not a message, and he has received the same four lines from three cousins by lunchtime.

8.If he is posted in another city

A message typed at midnight from two cities is the whole anniversary for a lot of Indian couples, and it deserves more than a sticker. Send something he can open more than once while he is alone: the message, a photo he has not seen, a voice note. A voice note is the part people skip and the part that works, because he has not heard the house in eleven days.

9.Midnight is fine, but send the real one later

The twelve o clock message is a habit and there is nothing wrong with it. What happens to it is the problem: he reads it half asleep and replies with an emoji. Send the short one at midnight if that is your tradition, then send the long one in the morning when he has a train or a coffee and time to read it twice.

10.Let the children and his family write too

His mother, his brother, the friend who introduced you both, and your children if you have them. Their lines about him are things he has never been told directly and will not be told at any other point in the year. Collected in one place they become an object rather than a stream of notifications, and the anniversary stops being one message he answered in a meeting.

Collect everyone in one place

11.If this year was a hard one

Money, illness, a loss, a stretch where the two of you were not kind to each other. A cheerful anniversary message on top of that year reads as a performance and both of you will know it. Write the year as it was and end on the fact that you are still here doing this, which is the actual thing worth marking when a year has been heavy.

12.Put the words somewhere they survive

A WhatsApp message is at the bottom of a chat by Thursday. Print the line and put it inside the anniversary card, write it in a book he is reading, or make one page with the photos and everyone else message on it and send him the link. The message he keeps is almost never the one that was hardest to write. It is the one that was easiest to find again.

Quick answers

What should I write for my husband on our marriage anniversary?

Write about a specific year rather than about the wedding. Name the year and one thing he did in it: the transfer he took quietly, the months he kept the house ordinary while something was going wrong, the Sundays he drove to your parents. A message with a year and an act in it could not have been sent to anybody else, which is why it gets kept.

What is a short anniversary wish for husband in Hindi?

शादी की सालगिरह मुबारक हो। घर आपकी वजह से घर लगता है। If you say तुम to him at home rather than आप, change the line before sending it. A message in the wrong register reads like something forwarded from a family group.

What do you write on a first marriage anniversary?

Write about the year that just finished rather than about the wedding, which everybody is still discussing anyway. A first year is new relatives, logistics and learning how somebody actually lives. Anything true about that is more interesting than the photographs, and it sets the habit for every anniversary after it.

What should you avoid writing in an anniversary message?

Comparisons to film couples, my better half, and the joke about tolerating each other for another year, which works in a group chat and lands strangely as the only thing you sent him. Forwarded shayari is not a message either. By lunchtime he has had the same four lines from three relatives.
