1.A colleague you genuinely like
Warm, specific, a bit funny, and still fine if their manager reads it over their shoulder:
- Happy birthday. You are the only reason the 10 AM standup is survivable.
- Happy birthday to the person who has covered for me more times than either of us has admitted in writing.
- Wishing you a great year. This place is measurably better with you in it, and I have the data.
- Happy birthday. Whoever hired you deserves a raise. Separately, so do you.
- Happy birthday to my favourite colleague, a title I award purely on the basis of who shares snacks.
- Have a brilliant one. Take the afternoon. I will tell them you are in a meeting.
