Birthday wishes for the grandmother who fed everyone first

A grandmother in her armchair delighted at something her granddaughter is showing her on a phone

Write to a grandmother about something she did, not about how much she means to you. "Happy birthday Nani. I still make chai the way you taught me and it is still not as good as yours" lands harder than any sentence containing the word blessed. Grandmothers spent decades doing very specific things for very specific people and almost never got told which of them stuck. Naming one is the whole gift, and it works whether you are nine or forty.

Below are 30+ wishes: short ones she can actually read on a phone, longer messages, wishes from a grandchild who lives abroad, ones for a milestone birthday, and what to write when she is unwell. There is also a practical note at the end about the format, because most families do this over a phone call that ends and leaves nothing behind.

The wishes, by situation

1.Short, and large enough to read on a phone

Keep these to one or two lines. Many grandmothers read messages at arm's length with the text size turned up, and a long paragraph in a small font simply does not get read:

  • Happy birthday Nani. Still the best cook in this family and everyone knows it.
  • Happy birthday Dadi. I am who I am mostly because of you.
  • Many happy returns, Ammamma. Wishing you a year of good health and no worrying about any of us.
  • Happy birthday to my favourite person in this whole family. Do not tell the others.
  • Happy birthday Nani. Eat something sweet today and let somebody else do the cooking.
  • Happy birthday Dadi. Ninety percent of my good habits are yours.

2.Longer messages, for a card or a call you plan

For when you want to say the whole thing. Anchor it to one specific memory rather than a list of qualities, because the specific one is what she will repeat to everyone who visits:

  • Happy birthday Nani. I have been thinking about the summers I spent at your house, and how you never once made me feel like I was in the way. You fed me, you let me sleep till eleven, and you defended me to my mother. I did not know at the time how rare that was. I know now. I hope this year is gentle with you.
  • Happy birthday Dadi. You have looked after this entire family for sixty years and I have never heard you ask anybody for anything. Today the only thing anyone is allowed to do is look after you. I am going to keep saying it until you accept it.
  • Happy birthday Nani. Everything I know about being patient with people I learned from watching you be patient with all of us, including the ones who did not deserve it. Wishing you a year with less worry in it, though I know you will find something to worry about anyway.
  • Happy birthday, Ajji. I still make your rasam and it is still not right. Send instructions again. Also, happy birthday, and please tell me what you actually want this year instead of saying you need nothing.
  • Happy birthday Dadi. When I was small you told everyone I was going to do something good with my life, and you said it in a way that made me believe it. That has quietly held me together more than once. Thank you.

3.From a grandchild who lives far away

Distance is the normal case now, and the thing that helps is not an apology. Say when you are next in the same room, and name something concrete you miss:

  • Happy birthday Nani. I am eight thousand kilometres away and I still think about your kitchen every time I try to cook. Coming home in December. Save nothing for me, I will eat everything then.
  • Happy birthday Dadi. Sorry I am not there. I will call at your usual afternoon time, not mine, so we are not both shouting at a bad line.
  • Happy birthday Ammamma. I have told everyone here about you, at length, repeatedly. They all know who you are now.
  • Happy birthday Nani. Twenty-three days until I am home. I have counted them out properly, on a calendar, like you taught me.
  • Happy birthday Dadi. The photo of us from my school farewell is on my desk here. People ask about you and I enjoy telling them.

4.From a young grandchild

If a child is writing or dictating, keep it in their voice and resist the urge to improve it. The slightly wrong version is the one that gets kept in a drawer for twenty years:

  • Happy birthday Dadi. You give the best hugs and also the best biscuits.
  • Happy birthday Nani. I love you more than ice cream. That is a lot.
  • Happy birthday Nani. Please come to my house soon. Bring the sweets.
  • Happy birthday Dadi. You are old but you are also very fun.
  • Happy birthday. You are my favourite grandmother. You are also my only one.

5.For a milestone birthday

Seventy, seventy-five, eighty. In a lot of Indian families this comes with a proper function, and the thing worth saying is what she built rather than how old she is:

  • Happy eightieth, Nani. There are twenty-six of us in this family and every single one exists because of choices you made. That is not a small thing to have done with a life.
  • Happy seventy-fifth, Dadi. Four generations in one room today, and all of them are here for you. Look around at what you made.
  • Happy birthday Ammamma. Seventy years and you still remember every birthday in this family without a calendar. Today the whole thing is pointed back at you.
  • Happy eightieth. You have outlasted three houses, two cities and a great deal of nonsense from all of us. Many more, and easier ones.
  • Happy birthday Nani. Everyone here has a story about you looking after them. That is the only measure that ever mattered and you have more of it than anyone I know.

6.When she is unwell, or it has been a hard year

The instinct is to be relentlessly cheerful. Do not be. Acknowledge the year honestly, keep it short, and be specific about what you are doing rather than what you are hoping:

  • Happy birthday Nani. It has been a difficult year and you have been braver about it than anyone. I am coming on Sunday and I am staying the whole day.
  • Happy birthday Dadi. Not a big one this year, and that is fine. I just wanted to say it properly and hear your voice.
  • Happy birthday Nani. Thinking about you today more than usual. Rest, let them look after you, and do not get up to make anyone tea.
  • Happy birthday. I know this year has taken a lot out of you. You are still the strongest person in this family and everyone in it knows it.

7.What to do about the format, because the call ends

Most families handle a grandmother's birthday with a phone call each. Twenty people ring across one day, she is delighted, and by evening none of it exists. She cannot reread a call. Two things fix that. First, write it down as well as saying it, even four lines, because grandmothers keep written things and reread them far more than anyone expects. Second, if the family is scattered across cities, collect everyone's message and photo in one place instead of twenty separate calls: the grandchildren abroad, the cousins she rarely sees, the great-grandchildren too small to write their own. Send it as one link and have somebody sit with her and scroll through it slowly. For a person whose whole life has been holding a family together, seeing all of it in one place is the point.

Make a page the whole family can write on

Quick answers

What should I write for my grandmother's birthday?

Name one specific thing she did rather than describing what she means to you. "I still make chai the way you taught me and it is still not as good as yours" beats any general sentence. Grandmothers rarely find out which of the thousands of small things they did actually stuck.

What do you write to a grandmother you cannot visit?

Skip the apology and give her a date. "Twenty-three days until I am home" does more than "sorry I cannot be there". Add one concrete thing you miss, like her kitchen or a specific dish, because that is what she will repeat to whoever visits her that week.

What is a good message for a grandmother on a milestone birthday?

Talk about what she built rather than how old she is. "There are twenty-six of us in this family and every one exists because of choices you made" is the register. At seventy-five or eighty the achievement is the family in the room, so point at it.

Turn the idea into the gift.
