First birthday wishes, written for who will read them later

A one year old cannot read, so a first birthday wish has two real audiences: the parents today, and the child in about twenty years. That changes what to write. "Wishing you a bright future full of success" does nothing for either. "You arrived three weeks early and in a hurry, which your mother says explains everything about you so far" works for both, because it is a fact nobody else can supply and it will still be true when they are old enough to read it. Below are 30+ wishes: short lines for the card, messages from parents, from grandparents, from an aunt or uncle, and a few written deliberately for later.

One practical note before you copy anything. First birthdays in India are usually large, so most of these messages are read out or written in front of extended family. Keep them warm and short in the room, and save anything longer for something the parents can keep.

1.Short and simple (for the card or the cake table)

Read quickly, often out loud, in a room full of relatives. Warm, short, no pressure loaded onto a one year old:

2.From the parents

The one that ends up framed. Write it to the child at twenty, not to the guests today, and put in the details only the two of you know:

Happy first birthday. You arrived three weeks early and in a hurry, which your mother says explains everything about you so far. You have laughed at things nobody else finds funny since about month four. We are writing this down because we know we will forget, and one day you will want to know what you were like.
One year ago today we had no idea what we were doing. We still don't, but we are much better at pretending. Happy birthday, little one. You have been easier than anyone warned us and harder than we expected, both on the same day, most days.
Happy first birthday. This year we learned exactly how little sleep a person needs and exactly how much noise one small human can make at 4 AM. We would not trade a single hour of it. You are the best thing that has happened to this family.
Happy birthday, our girl. You are one. You have four teeth, one favourite spoon, and strong opinions about being put down. We are keeping this so that you can read it later and know precisely how much you were adored before you could even talk.
Happy first birthday. Everyone told us the first year goes fast and we did not believe them. They were right. Thank you for making this the best year either of us has had.

3.From grandparents

Grandparents are usually the ones who bring the history, and that is worth writing down while it is still first-hand:

Happy first birthday. You have your grandfather's exact frown, which none of us expected to see again. Wishing you a life as full as ours has been.
Happy birthday, my child. I held your father the same way one year old, in the same house. This is the best part of getting older.
One year old already. May you always be as fearless as you are when you go headfirst off the sofa. Happy first birthday from your Nani.
Happy first birthday. We waited a long time for you and you were worth all of it. Blessings, always.

4.From an aunt, uncle or older cousin

The register here is warmer and funnier than the parents', because you get all the affection and none of the 4 AM shifts. Lean into that:

Happy first birthday. Being your aunt is the best job I have ever had and the only one with no responsibilities.
One year old and already better dressed than your uncle. Happy birthday, little one.
Happy first birthday. I plan to teach you everything your parents would rather I didn't. Starting next year.
Happy birthday, buddy. Officially the most popular person in this family. Sorry to everyone else.
Happy first birthday from the cousin who will one day be blamed for whatever you learn from me.

5.For a first birthday far away

For relatives who cannot get there, which at an Indian first birthday is usually several. Say where you are and when you will meet them, because the parents keep these:

Happy first birthday, little one. I have not met you yet and I already know your laugh better than my neighbours'.

6.Written for them to read in twenty years

The most valuable group here and the one nobody thinks to write. The parents will keep whatever you send. Write to the adult, not the baby:

You are one today and you will read this at some point when you are much older and probably going through something. Here is what was true on this day: you were completely, noisily loved by a lot of people. That has not changed.
By the time you read this you will not believe how small you were. Neither will we. Today you have four teeth and you will not eat anything green.
Happy first birthday. This was the year your parents figured out who they were going to be. You should know they took it very seriously and were very, very tired.
One day someone will show you this. When they do: your grandfather was there, he held you the whole afternoon, and he did not stop smiling once.

7.What to actually do with all of it

Here is the practical part. At a first birthday, forty people say something lovely and every single one of it disappears by the next morning. The cards get lost in the move, the WhatsApp group gets buried, and in twenty years the child has photographs of the day and no idea what anyone actually said. Collect them instead: give every relative and family friend a link before the party, let each add a message and a photo, and the parents keep the whole thing in one place. It costs a fraction of what the decorations cost, it works for the relatives who could not fly in, and it is the only part of a first birthday that gets better with time.
