Birthday wishes in Hindi that sound like you, not a forward

1.Short and respectful (for elders, cards, and family groups)

Proper Hindi, short enough to read on a phone. These are the safe ones for anyone older than you, and for the family WhatsApp group where everyone can see what you wrote:

• जन्मदिन की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएं। आपका यह साल सेहत और सुकून से भरा रहे।
• जन्मदिन मुबारक हो। ईश्वर आपको लंबी उम्र और अच्छी सेहत दे।
• आपको जन्मदिन की बहुत बहुत बधाई। आपका आशीर्वाद हमेशा हम सब पर बना रहे।
• हैप्पी बर्थडे! आपका हर दिन आज जैसा ही अच्छा बीते।
• जन्मदिन की शुभकामनाएं। इस साल आप अपना भी उतना ही ख्याल रखें जितना सबका रखते हैं।
• बहुत बहुत मुबारक हो। आपकी हंसी ऐसे ही बनी रहे।

2.For friends, in Hinglish (how people actually text)

This is the register almost everyone under forty uses with friends, and it is the one the shayari sites never give you. Casual, a bit rude, warm underneath:

• Janamdin mubarak ho bhai. Aaj ki party pakki, koi bahana nahi chalega.
• Happy birthday yaar. Tu bilkul nahi badla, aur yeh compliment hai ya nahi, khud decide kar le.
• Happy birthday! Ek saal aur bada ho gaya, akal abhi bhi wahi hai.
• Janamdin ki bahut badhai. Tere bina yeh group bilkul boring ho jata.
• Happy birthday bro. Tu mera sabse purana bakwaas partner hai. Kahin mat jaana.
• Happy birthday! Cake ka photo bhej, warna maanunga nahi ki manaya bhi hai.

3.For mummy and papa

The one place where proper Hindi almost always beats Hinglish, even if you speak to them in a mix. Name something they did rather than describing what they mean to you:

• हैप्पी बर्थडे मम्मी। आपने हम सबका ख्याल रखते रखते अपना ख्याल रखना ही छोड़ दिया। इस साल थोड़ा अपने लिए भी जिएं।
• जन्मदिन मुबारक हो पापा। आपने कभी शिकायत नहीं की, और हमें कभी किसी चीज़ की कमी महसूस नहीं होने दी। यह छोटी बात नहीं है।
• मम्मी, जन्मदिन की बहुत बहुत बधाई। घर की हर अच्छी चीज़ कहीं न कहीं आपसे शुरू होती है।
• हैप्पी बर्थडे पापा। जो भी सही आदतें मुझमें हैं, वो आपको देखकर ही आई हैं।
• मम्मी, आज आप कुछ मत बनाइए। बस बैठिए। जन्मदिन मुबारक हो।

4.For bhai and behen

Siblings talk almost entirely through insults, in every language. Keep the affection at the end where they have to look for it:

• Happy birthday behen. Tu ab bhi meri sabse badi problem hai aur sabse badi support bhi.
• जन्मदिन मुबारक हो भाई। लड़ते रहेंगे, पर तेरे खिलाफ किसी और को बोलने नहीं दूंगा।
• Happy birthday didi. Bachpan mein tu meri har shikayat mummy tak pahunchati thi. Aur har musibat se bachati bhi thi.
• हैप्पी बर्थडे। तू बड़ा हो गया है, समझदार होने में अभी वक्त लगेगा।
• Happy birthday bhai. Ghar mein sabse zyada tujhse hi ladta hoon, aur sabse pehle tujhe hi call karta hoon.

5.Short shayari, that does not read like a forward

Two lines, not eight. The reason forwarded shayari fails is length and grandeur, not the form itself. Keep it short and it works:

• हर दिन आपका ऐसा गुज़रे, कि याद रखने लायक कुछ न कुछ ज़रूर हो। जन्मदिन मुबारक।
• खुशियां आपके घर का पता भूलें नहीं, और फिक्र रास्ता ही भूल जाए। हैप्पी बर्थडे।
• उम्र बढ़ती रहे, हौसला वैसा ही रहे, और हंसी ऐसी ही खुली रहे। जन्मदिन की बधाई।
• आपके हिस्से में सुकून वाली नींद आए, और सुबह ऐसी जिसमें जल्दी न हो। मुबारक हो।

6.Formal Hindi, for a teacher, boss or elder outside the family

Respectful, short, and safe to be read by anyone else. Avoid anything that sounds personal here, the way you would in English:

• जन्मदिन की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएं सर। आपका मार्गदर्शन हमेशा साथ रहता है।
• आपको जन्मदिन की बहुत बधाई मैडम। आपसे जो सीखा है, वो आज भी काम आता है।
• जन्मदिन मुबारक हो सर। आपका यह वर्ष स्वस्थ और सफल रहे।
• शुभ जन्मदिन। आपके सहयोग के लिए धन्यवाद, और आने वाला साल शुभ हो।

7.How to pick the right one, and what to add

Two decisions. First, register: proper Hindi for anyone older than you and for anything written down, Hinglish for friends and siblings your age. Getting this backwards is the actual mistake, not the wording. Second, add one line of your own at the end, in whatever language you two normally use. Something only you know: the year, the place, the running joke, the thing they did for you. एक बात जो सिर्फ आप जानते हैं, वही मैसेज को अपना बनाती है। One more practical note: a message in a family WhatsApp group is buried by evening under cake photos and forwards from relatives. If you want them to still have it next year, put it somewhere it stays, and it works far better when everyone else can add theirs to the same place.
